Man faces rape, kidnapping charges after alleged attack

JACKSON, Tenn. — A man recently accused of taking a child from a female acquaintance’s car was in court Wednesday on rape and assault charges. Cornelius Davis is accused of taking the child and the woman’s purse from her car last week and later assaulting and raping her when she went to get the child back, according to court papers. The woman told police Davis took the child around 11:30 p.m. July 16 as she was in a fast food drive-thru. When she went to a Redleaf Place residence that night to get the child, she says Davis got in her car and started to drive away, according to an affidavit. She reported he nearly hit her with the car, forcing her to jump onto the hood, the document states. She told police he then got out of the car, locked it and kept her keys. Shortly after midnight, the woman says Davis attacked her inside the residence and refused to let her leave or use her phone. She told police at one point Davis shoved her to the floor and raped her. She says he later hit her with an ottoman he threw at her, strangled her and held her to the floor, saying “I’m going to bust your head open,” an affidavit states. Court papers say the woman was able to call 911 the next morning. Police say she had bruises on her arms, legs and neck and a swollen eye. Davis is charged with aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated domestic assault. The judge set his bond at $75,000.
