EAST JACKSON — Fire officials say a home likely will be a total loss after a Wednesday afternoon fire. A 70-year-old man, the only occupant of the Taylor Street home, brought his lawnmower inside to work on it and sparked the fire when he tried to start the mower, according to the fire department. Firefighters say the blaze spread rapidly through the entire home. Crews said they had the fire out in about 30 minutes. They were still on site working on hot spots around 1:30 p.m. The firefighters had to take frequent breaks due to the extreme heat, and officials called in backup to relieve the crews, according to the fire department.
