SELMER, Tenn. — Shoppers go from store to store in downtown Selmer to benefit the local economy, which means the state’s big break of a tax-free weekend is not only going to benefit big retailers. Holly Stackhouse owns one of more than 80 businesses that have opened in McNairy County over the past year. As her monogramming machine is hard at work, so is she. “Selmer has a lot to offer, and I think it gives us an advantage that we have several stores available,” said Stackhouse, who owns a boutique called Sew Southern. For the first time in years, nearly every storefront has an “open” sign attached to it. “We want our businesses to thrive here in town, and over the past several months, all the downtown areas have had a business in them now,” Selmer Mayor John Smith said. With tax-free weekend, city leaders thought there could not be a better time to bring a big audience downtown. The night is complete with coupons, dinner deals and a live band. “We’re just trying to do what we can to help sell merchandise and get people to meet each other and become better neighbors,” Janet Rail, who co-founded McNairy First, said. Rail hopes with better neighbors more will see opportunities to open a business in McNairy County and be a part of the community. Stackhouse hopes this is just one more event to help stitch together her community. “We stay busy, and I certainly cannot complain,” Stackhouse said. McNairy First said they are planning seven more events throughout the year to drive traffic into downtown Selmer.
