Woman crashes car while trying to flee after shoplifting, police say

JACKSON, Tenn. — A woman in city court Monday is accused of stealing from a dollar store and then trying to flee in her vehicle when confronted by an employee. A Dollar General employee called police on DeAnna Jackson Saturday after reportedly seeing her conceal merchandise in her purse at the store on Campbell Street, according to an affidavit. Police say the employee confronted her in the parking lot as she was leaving in her car. When the employee tried to recover the stolen property, police say she placed the items under the passenger seat and tried to drive away, forcing the employee to hold onto the car to keep from being run over. The employee jumped away from the car as Jackson was about to collide with another vehicle, causing minor cuts and scrapes to his arm and knee, according to the affidavit. Police say Jackson tried to leave the scene but was unable to because her car was lodged on a large rock. Officers recovered two items from Jackson valued at a total of $11, the affidavit states. Jackson is charged with a felony count of reckless endangerment and theft of property under $500. Her bond is set at $10,000.
