Woman in court after police say they witnessed child abuse

JACKSON, Tenn. — A child abuse charge landed a woman in city court Monday after a behavioral health treatment worker called police to report the alleged abuse. Amy Rhea is accused of abusing an 8-year-old family member after police say they saw her grab the child by his hair twice and call him derogatory names, according to an affidavit. A worker who provided services to the child called police to the home around 1 p.m. Friday to report the abuse. Along with witnessing the alleged abuse, police say the child had no clean clothes to wear or food to eat in the home. They also say Rhea was intoxicated. The child was placed in the custody of the Department of Children’s Services. Rhea faces a count of child abuse and neglect or endangerment. Her bond is set at $5,000.
