PARIS, Tenn. – Henry County’s football program has left an indelible mark in the Class 5A over the past decade. The Patriots’ 2011 and 2013 state championships aren’t the only impressive feats on their resume. Henry County has only suffered two district losses over the last eight years. First year head coach James Counce Jr. believes that recent success comes from the school’s family atmosphere. “I think it has a lot to do with caring about the kids,” Counce Jr. said. “Holding them accountable and giving them that love. I think it’s all those things connected together that help us be successful.” Counce Jr. is no stranger to the Patriots sidelines. This would have been his 20th season alongside his dad, James Counce Sr. who retired in March. “Nothing different. Just doing the same things I’ve grown up doing,” Counce Jr. said. “That’s our philosophy. We’re going to stay the same. Shouldn’t be any changes.” Counce Jr. added that he can’t thank the community enough for their support of the football team. Regardless of the opponent, the Patriot pride is deep in the stands for home and away games. “They’re people that will be out here starting at 3:30 p.m.,” Counce Jr. explained. “It’s a real tight community that we feel fortunate to be here.” The Patriots host Liberty Tech in Week 1.
