MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — Hunters will be tracking squirrels down early Saturday morning. It’s the first opportunity of the season to bring in small game, which also falls on free hunting day across the state. “We’re encouraging everyone to get out and enjoy a pretty day, pretty weather, enjoy the woods,” said Steve Henderson, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency boating and education coordinator. “If you’re lucky enough to bag a limit, that’s even better. But the big thing is to get out and have some fun.” Before pointing the crosshairs at the target, wildlife experts said there are some things you should know before looking toward the trees. “Walking through the woods, use a two-hand carry, because it’s the safest,” Henderson said. “If I were to stumble, I could use the butt of the gun to help recover, and I have control of the muzzle at all times if I fall.” Experts say on opening day you won’t see a lot of neon in the woods because squirrels can see color. Instead, you’ll see a lot of camouflage, which means it’s important to know what lies behind the target. “Positively identify what’s beyond that squirrel. It could be another hunter, so you want to identify what’s over there before you take a shot,” Henderson said. Before shooting, make sure the gun’s barrel is clean or there could be occlusion and the barrel could bust. Also check to be sure the gun’s safety is on until the target is in sight. As long as hunters stay safe, TWRA officials say there’s one other thing to focus on. “It’s really about going out, enjoying yourself and having some good table fare afterwards,” Henderson said. TWRA officials say they will be checking for hunting certifications, which everyone must have if they were born after Jan. 1, 1969. To learn more about the certification, go to the TWRA website, www.tn.gov/twra.
