SELMER, Tenn. — A fire breaks out while a West Tennessee family is cooking dinner, but quick reactions and timely help from neighbors helped make sure everyone made it out alive. A Selmer family said it is still a nightmare after flames ripped through their home Tuesday evening. “My ex-boyfriend’s girlfriend was in there cooking when the oven just exploded, and my ex-boyfriend said something in there is burning,” Cynthia Harrington said. Harrington said she immediately grabbed her three children and rushed outside looking to get help from her brother. “The neighbors came over and said something happened in the kitchen and there’s a fire,” Donald Johnson said. “So I went outside, and the flames were shooting out of the windows at that point in time.” Johnson said he immediately grabbed a garden hose and dialed 911. He said seconds felt like an eternity as he watched flames devour his sister’s home. “I’m just glad everybody got out. It could have been a lot worse, like a fatality,” Johnson said. More than four departments across McNairy County responded to the fire, including close to 10 trucks. The family said they will be living next door at their brother’s home until they find another place to live. “I’m traumatized that my kids lost their home that they lived in for four years,” Harrington said. “That’s all I can say is traumatized, wondering how my kids are going to be and what we are going to do.”
