HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — A Humboldt city worker has died after being injured by a fallen tree. George Adams, 70, also known as Rockin’ Chair, was injured when a crew was working Monday morning on Viking Drive behind Humboldt High School, according to Mayor Marvin Sikes. “One of our workers there was up close to a rotten tree and didn’t quite realize how rotten it was,” Sikes told WBBJ Monday. “He was pulling some vines out, and when he was pulling those vines, the tree fell and fell on him.” Adams was airlifted to a Memphis hospital and later died just before 3 p.m., Sikes said. Those who spoke with WBBJ on Monday remembered Adams fondly. “I’ve known him ever since I was a child,” Buddy Laster said. “His name was ‘Rockin’ Chair,’ and that was his CB handle.” “His personality, you would never forget the guy, and then with a name like ‘Rockin’ Chair,’ you’ll never forget who he is,” fellow Humboldt city worker Justin Rehmert said. Humboldt’s mayor met with other city workers Monday afternoon about the incident and said they ended that meeting with a word of prayer. A number of people stopped by Viking Park on Monday after they heard about the accident. Sikes said the city is still looking into everything that happened. “We are investigating it like we have to with any incident,” Mayor Sikes said. “We just don’t really know. Right now George is all we’re really worried about.” Sikes said this is the first death of a city worker in Humboldt. There is no word yet on any funeral arrangements.
