WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tenn. — Officials are investigating how a student was able to bring a toy gun to school this week. The 7-year-old student brought a toy gun in his backpack to Dresden Elementary School, according to a Weakley County Schools release. Authorities say the boy did not realize the toy gun, which looked like a real gun, was in his backpack until he and some friends noticed it while waiting to get on the bus at the end of the school day, according to the release. The parents of a child who saw the toy weapon contacted the sheriff’s office, which along with the Dresden Police Department has assisted with the investigation. “We have no reason to believe a threat of harm or ill intent existed and are mindful of the age of this student, but we’re looking into this very seriously,” Assistant Director of Schools Jeff Kelley states in the release. Kelley also says the school system will reach out to parents to ask for their help in ensuring toy weapons that look real are kept away from school and to make sure real weapons at home can’t be accessed by children.
