MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — A local civic club honors a volunteer firefighter who died while working on a call. A fallen Madison County volunteer firefighter who died in the line of duty earlier this year was named Firefighter of the Year by the Jackson Exchange Club. Chris Blankenship died May 3 after a tree fell and trapped him while working a car wreck on Highway 18. Fire officials say they hope the award will remind his family of how the people of Madison County appreciate his service. “Years from now, when there’s not as much talk about it, it will remind them that the job he did for this county and how much the people of this county appreciated him for what he did,” Chief Eric Turner said. Blankenship’s farther-in-law, who is a captain with the Madison County Fire Department, accepted the award.
