HAYTI, Mo. — It has been a year since controversy consumed the city of Dyersburg over a yellow Lab named Beau, the dog accused of killing a duck and attempting to bite an 8-year-old boy. Beau was threatened to be euthanized multiple times, but after months of costly court proceedings the city agreed to simply ban Beau. Now with that all laid to rest, a new petition circulating on the Internet could change the status of Beau and the city of Dyersburg. “The best thing I could have done is to have some peace and quiet where I am at now. I’m really thankful,” Danny Higgins, Beau’s owner, said. Just a year ago, Higgins and Beau were in the middle of a controversy when Beau was accused of killing a duck and lunging at both an 8-year-old and officers just a couple feet from Higgins’ yard. “I’m not trying to cause any trouble. I just want the ‘vicious’ label taken off of him because he’s not a vicious dog,” Higgins said. The city of Dyersburg threatened to euthanize Beau if Higgins did not comply with their vicious dog ordinance. But after Beau’s story spread worldwide, the support overwhelmed the city, forcing them to cut a deal with Higgins. “When I got him out I had to put a chip in him, and if he’s ever caught in Dyersburg I go to jail and he is euthanized,” Higgins said. Now living in the fields of Hayti, Missouri, Higgins and Beau still live with the label of ‘vicious’. But now a petition has been created in Beau’s name to help bring him back home. “Everybody that signed it is saying ‘Beau strong’ and ‘we’ve been with you all the way, we still think about you and we still see your pictures,’ and it’s really something,” Higgins said. Higgins drives the extra miles every Sunday to go to church in Dyersburg, leaving his best friend at home. Higgins is hoping the new petition will remove the ‘vicious’ label, which would allow him to visit friends and family in the city he lived in for more than 25 years, while keeping his best friend by his side. “People that have dogs know they love their dogs and they are part of their family. They all know that’s like my kid,” Higgins said. To find out more about the petition for Beau, visit the Seen on 7 section of our website.
