Martin police cite workers at 2 stores for underage alcohol sales

MARTIN, Tenn. — Police cited employees at two Martin businesses over the weekend for selling alcohol to minors. The Criminal Investigations Division of the Martin Police Department conducted compliance checks Saturday at all 24 businesses with alcohol licenses inside the city limits, according to a release from the department. LaShonda Williams, 37, of Fulton, Ky., was cited for a sale at Pocket’s Shell located at 821 University Street, the release states. Stephen Darby, 40, of Martin, was cited for a sale at JJ’s Quick Stop located at 785 Main Street, according to the release. The employees receive a criminal summons and must appear in court, according to police. The businesses are summoned before the Martin City Beer Board and are subject to penalties and/or loss of beer permits. “While the majority of businesses comply with the law, any business selling alcohol to underage persons is unacceptable,” the release states. “If you fail to ask for identification and serve alcohol to someone under 21, the next person asking for identification just may be a Martin Police Department officer asking for yours.” To report sales of alcohol to underage persons, contact Martin police at 731-587-5355 or the CrimeStoppers Hotline at 731-587-2611.
