DYERSBURG, Tenn. — Sun Products Corporation announced this week that they will close their Dyersburg manufacturing plant in December. The closure will leave about 175 employees without a job, according to a release from the company. The company, which manufactures and markets laundry and household care products, announced the closure Wednesday. Dyersburg Chamber of Commerce Director Allen Hester is worried about the 175 people who will out of work. “The real impact is the 175 people out of work, all right before Christmas,” Hester said. The Sun facility has been open for nearly 30 years, opening in 1987. Declining consumer demand for powder laundry detergent as liquid and single-dose detergent has gained popularity is to blame for the plant’s closure, according to the release. It is now more cost effective for the company to consolidate some production into existing facilities as well as outsource some to third-party suppliers, according to the company. In the release, the company encourages their Dyersburg employees to apply for open positions at their other locations, including in Bowling Green, Ky. The company will provide relocation assistance, and those who do not apply for or are not offered positions at other locations will receive transition assistance packages including severance pay, benefits continuance and outplacement support in seeking new jobs, the release states.
