HENRY COUNTY, Tenn. — A teacher at Henry County High School is in jail on charges of sexual battery and solicitation of a minor involving a student. Kevin Smothers is accused of meeting an underage female student in September at which time unlawful sexual contact and solicitation took place, according to a release from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office. Smothers also is charged with soliciting the girl for sex via text messaging and Instagram between sometime in September and Oct. 27. There is no evidence that anything unlawful occurred on the high school campus, the release states. Smothers is charged with sexual battery by an authority figure, two counts of solicitation of a minor to commit statutory rape by an authority figure, and soliciting sexual exploitation of a minor by electronic means. Smothers is being held in the Henry County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond. Some Henry County High school parents are outraged with this incident. “Children are not adults, they can’t make that kind of decision, and they don’t need that kind of pressure in their lives. They’ve got enough to deal with just being in a kid,” said Daniel Parker. Smothers is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m., Thursday in Henry County General Sessions Court. Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt. Buford Taylor at Henry County High School by “Text a Tip” at 731-336-1532 or Investigator Gary Vandiver at 731-642-1672.
