Jackson mayoral candidate Charlie Motton dies at 60

JACKSON, Tenn. — A Jackson native and noted mayoral candidate has died. Charlie Motton was found Friday morning dead of natural causes in his home, according to Jackson police. He was 60 years old. Motton was a 1973 graduate of Jackson Central-Merry high school. After graduating, Motton joined the U.S. Army where he served his country five years. Motton began his political career in 1988 with a run for Jackson City Council. He would go on to run for mayor of Jackson in 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015. In 2006, Motton was a recipient of a Freedom Team Salute certificate of appreciation for outstanding service as a U.S. Army soldier.
