Man goes on trial for death of infant daughter
CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The trial has begun for a Crossville man accused of killing his seven-week-old daughter by shaking her.
The Crossville Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1SoaQdb) that testimony in 43-year-old William Allen Davenport’s trial began Tuesday. Davenport is being tried on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse in the November 2010 death of his infant daughter, Destiny.
Tuesday, jurors heard an audio recording of Davenport’s 911 call and saw videos of police questioning him. In each instance, Davenport said the baby choked on formula and stopped breathing. Davenport told police that he attempted to revive the infant by hitting her on the back and holding her up and shaking her.
Police say they doubt Davenport’s account of what happened. They say Davenport either intentionally or unintentionally shook the baby violently.
