Man charged with murder in death of woman in western NC

BAKERSVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Authorities have charged a man with first-degree murder in the disappearance of a woman in western North Carolina.

Mitchell County authorities tell local media outlets that 41-year-old Cecil Byrd was charged Wednesday after his vehicle was stopped in McDowell County.

He is charged in the death of 49-year-old Lisa Ann Robbins who disappeared from her home near Bakersville on Oct. 23. Earlier Wednesday, authorities found human remains off a road near the North Carolina-Tennessee border.

Byrd was stopped on an outstanding warrant for using the debit card of another woman who is also missing. Authorities say 45-year-old Sarah Denise Riddle was reported missing Nov. 1 in McDowell County.

After being interviewed by authorities Wednesday, Byrd was charged with murder. It was not immediately known if he has an attorney.
