Crisis intervention team graduates 19 new responders

JACKSON, Tenn. — A new class of first responders hit the streets of West Tennessee Friday as 19 men and women of the Jackson Police Department and the Madison County Sheriff’s Department graduated from the Crisis Intervention Training class. The course spanned 40 hours this week, teaching them how to handle those in a mental crisis. Officials say the class is fairly new but is definitely needed. “It’s a few more tools in their tool kit to go out and deal with persons in crises, not necessarily mental illness, but it’s targeted toward mental illness,” said Capt. Anthony Heavner of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. Officials say this is the 11th class to graduate and that about 200 first responders have now graduated from this program.
