Union University holds official opening of The Logos library

JACKSON, Tenn. — A vision became reality Friday with the opening of a new $18 million library at Union University in north Jackson. The opening of The Logos marks nearly half a decade of work for the Christian college. A quote from Winston Churchill — “We shape our buildings. Thereafter, they shape us.” — helped open the doors to a new era of learning at the university’s new library with the unique name, Logos, which is Greek for “word.” “The first words written by John in the gospel are ‘in the beginning was the word, and the word was God, and the word was with God,'” said Bill Latimer of the Latimer Foundation. University officials say the 60,000-square-foot facility cost $18 million and gives students a new place to come together and learn. “Every great institution has a great library, and now Union, a great institution, has a great library,” Union University President Dub Oliver said. “It’s an incredible facility for students to study in, for them to research in, for our faculty members as well. So I think we’re going to be really blessed by this.” Union officials say the 12-foot cross that tops the Logos will be lit by spotlights so it can be seen 24 hours a day.
