Mother faces child abuse charge after whipping daughter with belt

JACKSON, Tenn. — A woman went before a judge Tuesday on a child abuse charge after allegedly causing multiple bruises and welts on her child with a belt. Tamaran Ross faces one count of child abuse after an investigator with the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services began looking into a report of an 8-year-old with bruises, welts and discoloration on her arms, shoulder, back and legs on Monday at Alexander Elementary School, according to court documents. When police interviewed Ross, they say she admitted to whipping her daughter with a belt Sunday at their home, hitting her on her back, legs and buttocks. Ross is being held in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
