University offers new program to help combat local crime

JACKSON, Tenn. — A new program is underway at the University of Memphis Lambuth Campus, and it focuses on local crime. A ribbon was cut Monday afternoon by city officials with a new partnership. The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice will begin courses and workshops at the beginning of 2016. University leaders said this program focuses on lessening crime in West Tennessee by not focusing on law enforcement alone, but what the rest of the community can do. “We feel the best way to address issues of crime and delinquency is to not rely solely on law enforcement, but also to rely on other elements of the community,” Dr. K. B. Turner said, who has worked for decades with and for other law enforcement agencies Workshops and classes begin in January and a conference for the community is scheduled in April.
