Three Way to pay county for more deputies

THREE WAY, Tenn. — Two more Madison County deputies soon will patrol the streets of Three Way thanks to a new agreement between the city and county. Three Way Mayor Larry Sanders said the deputies will work out of the fire station. “We feel like the more visibility that we have of the sheriff’s department in our area, then the less likely the bad guys are going to come around,” he said. Sanders said he expects the extra enforcement to cost the community about $100,000 per year. “We’re just going to trim some areas that we probably had a little extra money in,” he said. The Madison County Sheriff‘s Office said they do not plan to hire new deputies but will reassign two people already working for the department. Public Information Officer Tom Mapes said the deputies in Three Way will still be able to respond to other calls in the county. “We’ll need the freedom to be able to respond because you never know what emergency’s next, where it’s needed,” Mapes said. Sanders said they do not have much crime in the city but that they want to make citizens feel safer. “We’re interested in their protection and their well-being,” he said. Sanders said they hope to have the new deputies patrolling Three Way by Jan. 1. Mapes said the sheriff‘s office already has one deputy assigned to Three Way. Madison County commissioners still need to vote to accept the funding, which is expected to happen next week. Sanders said they will see how the first six months goes and then decide if they want to continue paying for the extra enforcement.
