West Carroll’s Heckert makes history with signing

West Carroll principal and athletic director Dexter Williams only remembers two War Eagles, both boys, to ever play Division I basketball. Senior Madison Heckert became the first girl on Wednesday as she signed with Arkansas State University. “It feels like I made it through because we’ve been talking about this for a while,” Heckert said. “My hard work has paid off.” During her visit, Heckert says Arkansas State players and coaches were very outgoing. “When I went up there, everyone was very friendly and welcoming” Heckert said. “They came up to and talked to me even though they knew I was nervous.” Heckert has already entered the school’s 1,000 point club and averaged a double-double last season. Upon graduation, the forward will have 16 hours of post secondary credit. She also has a 4.0 GPA.
