Credit unions give away free gas to West Tennesseans

JACKSON, Tenn. — Credit unions across West Tennessee gave away free gas Friday as a way to say thank you to their customers and encourage others to join them. “There’s nothing better on a great fall weekend to have a full tank of gas to head out to enjoy this fall weather,” said Josh McAfee representing the credit unions of West Tennessee. Cars backed up for a mile Friday in hopes of getting the free $25 of gas to fill their tank. “What we’re doing is we’re just rewarding all of West Tennessee for choosing credit unions to bank with,” McAfee said. “There’s over 50,000 West Tennesseans that chose to bank with credit unions, so this is just a way to say thank you.” “I feel good. I’m out here, my husband informed me of it and he’s over here,” said Lacynthia Comer, a free gas recipient. “He made it, I made it. I’m number 100 and I’m just excited. This is a good thing and, hey, everybody needs gas to keep on rolling.” Cars moved through the line steadily, and drivers say the longest wait was about 15 minutes. “It’s going to move pretty quickly,” McAfee said. “When folks hear there is free gas being pumped they flock like moths to the flame.” “I hear it on the radio and I was way over on Parkway. I just hightailed it over here as fast as I could,” said free gas recipient Nancy Miller. “I’m just so excited.” The cars backed up from the BP all the way down to Carriage House, but only the first 100 received free gas. McAfee said the credit unions thrive on the slogan ‘people helping people,’ so what better way to do that than pump some gas. It took only about an hour to get all 100 cars filled with their $25 of gas.
