Officials investigate alleged sexual assault at Haywood High School

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — The Haywood County Board of Education is investigating an alleged sexual assault at Haywood High School, according to a release from Associate Superintendent Art Garrett. The school district isn’t saying when the alleged assault happened but are saying the alleged crime happened on campus at Haywood High School and involved only students. However, district leaders would not say how many people are under investigation or the type of the assault. WBBJ spoke to Associate Superintendent Garrett by phone. He said their main priority right now is maintaining a safe learning environment for all of their students. Brownsville police confirm they are investigating but said they would not release the report or any other information because the case involves minors. Garrett was able to confirm no students involved in this investigation are currently at the school. The board is cooperating with local authorities in their investigation, according to the release. “The HCBOE does not tolerate any form of assault and will continue with its cooperation with any law enforcement in this matter,” the release states. “The safety of students remains the number one priority of HCS.”
