West Tennesseans search for a unique Christmas tree

SELMER, Tenn. — With thanksgiving almost over and Christmas straight ahead, more and more Christmas trees will soon shine around West Tennessee. Duncan tree farm says this weekend will be one of the busiest of the season and owners say most people are just looking for a tree with character. “Choose and cut — That’s what we are. A choose and cut tree farm,” said Charlie Duncan the owner of Duncan Tree Farm.

Daryl Miller and his wife are looking for the perfect tree for the holidays but they are keeping an open mind. “You know, we just wanted something with personality,” said Miller. “We get tired of the same old reusable trees that you use every year. Last year ours had a lot of light problems working right and decided this would be a nice outing.” Duncan Tree Farm has garland and wreaths as well as five different varieties of trees to choose from. “I sell a Fraser fur which is a shipped in tree. We raise Leanne Cyprus, Carolina Sapphire, Blue Eyes, and Virginia Pine,” said Duncan. Duncan said it takes anywhere from 4 to 7 years to grow a Christmas tree but the farm offers a wide variety in size so there is something for everyone’s needs. “We do have some large trees and small trees for the families that don’t want a big tree. Of course we have a lot of 10 to 12 foot trees.”

Miller ended picking a tree that was flocked to add a twist to a classic tradition. “We looked at the flocked trees that they had, they had 5 or 6 together. They had a good assortment for us to choose from, so we decided we like the flocked trees.” A flocked tree is the trees that have the false snow-blown look. Duncan said the best way to keep your tree alive is to water twice a day. This will also keep it from becoming a fire hazard. And if you’re wondering how much these cost — It ranges from $15-$125 for wreaths with the average price around $22. Christmas trees start at $45 and go up to 150 dollars.
