Company will turn old school into distillery in Muhlenberg

GREENVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A western Kentucky company is planning to invest nearly $1.3 million to turn an old school into a distillery, creating 31 jobs.

Gov. Steve Beshear’s office announced the plan Tuesday for Muhlenberg County’s historic Graham School. The building housed a high school from 1933 to 1990 and was an elementary school until it closed in 2004.

The release says Pond River Enterprises LLC will first provide products for the unaged spirits market, or “moonshine,” then expand into bourbon.

Thomas Bard, one of the company’s owners, attended the school, and so did three generations of his family.

The company expects to begin distillation by next November and to open to visitors by January 2017.

The state has given preliminary approval for tax incentives up to $225,000.
