Jury reaches verdict in trial of former Jackson officer

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — After more than an hour of deliberation, a Madison County jury found former Jackson Police Officer Lamont Gray not guilty of rape but guilty of offensive touching. Also included in their Friday morning verdict, Gray was found not guilty of sexual battery. Gray took the stand in his own defense Thursday evening, taking questions from prosecutors and officials of the court for more than an hour. The victim also took the stand on Thursday, taking questions for more than two hours. She told the jury Gray forced himself on her after she asked him to come and help her with an alarm. She said the two met after the former officer began helping her with her son. Throughout the trial and his testimony Gray denied doing anything wrong. Gray is scheduled to be sentenced on the offensive touching charge Dec. 21.
