West Tennessee Marines celebrate 240 years

HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — Marines in West Tennessee and across the world celebrated a very important birthday, Tuesday. November 10, 2015, marked the 240th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. In celebration of the day, members of the Captain Jack Holland Marine Corp League based in Jackson visited the veterans home in Humboldt and held a special ceremony. Marines in attendance participated in the time-honored tradition of cutting the Marine birthday cake. The oldest and youngest Marine in attendance were honored in the ceremony. The commandant’s message was also read as part of the program. “It’s important for us to carry on this tradition,” said Carrie Mercer, a member of the Marine Corp League. “We want the generations who have come before us to know they mean something and we appreciate what they’ve done and the trails they’ve blazed.” The Marine Corps was founded on November 10, 1775. This marked the six year members of the Marine Corp League held a birthday celebration at the veterans’ home.
