Woman charged after police say embezzled over $300,00 from a lawyer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – A woman who worked for a local attorney has been charged after police say she embezzled over $360,000 from her employer.

The Commercial Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/1WIojST) by the time 48-year-old Teresa Sumpter was caught in September, police say she had embezzled at least $362,248.73. She was arrested Sunday.

Sumpter is charged with theft of property over $250,000, forgery and three counts of identity theft. It isn’t immediately clear if she has an attorney.

Sumpter worked for attorney Jerry Schatz as a secretary from July 2013 through September 2015, while also handling his day-to-day officer operations.

During her time there, police say Sumpter embezzled the money by stealing checks while also opening at least three credit cards in Schatz’s name.

Schatz didn’t respond to comment from the newspaper.
