Small businesses work together to keep holiday crime low

CHESTER COUNTY, Tenn. — As shoppers head to the stores, some local business owners have joined together to stop five-finger discounts.

Most residents will tell you Henderson is a town with few strangers. “That’s part of knowing everybody comes in,” Katrece Brown, owner of La Di Da, said.

Henderson police said holiday crime has been relatively low for the 2015 season.

According to police, they haven’t seen as many of the typical holiday crimes such as armed robbery and shoplifting. Police said many of the local businesses are looking out for each other.

Brown has owned La Di Da for nearly three years. “If someone’s activity doesn’t look right or somebody is lurking around in the parking lot, we’ll say ‘there’s somebody out there.'”

Brown credits that neighborly camaraderie among the business owners as something she hopes will attract future stores to set up in Henderson.

“If someone else would come on in, we would do the same for them,” she said.

Antwon Chaney moved to Henderson from Jackson. He said as a local shopper he’s noticed how the stores keep an eye out for crime.

Chaney said more businesses could benefit from the model. “Cause everybody is just trying to take care of one another as well as take care of their town.”
