Mississippi River open to one-way traffic near Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – The Mississippi River has been opened to one-way traffic near Memphis where two towing vessels collided.

The Coast Guard said the towing vessels Margaret Ann and William Strait collided Monday, and the William Strait sank in 20 feet of water.

A news release from the Coast Guard said response crews are using containment boom and sorbent boom around the vessel to prevent further spreading of pollution.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, and a salvage plan is being developed to remove the sunken vessel.

The restricted area of the river is between mile markers 726 and 728.
