Accused gunman found guilty in 2012 shooting death

Craig Taylor

JACKSON, Tenn. — The accused gunman in a 2012 murder outside an east Jackson home has been found guilty on all counts.

Craig Taylor was found guilty Thursday afternoon on charges including first-degree murder, felony murder and attempted aggravated robbery in the shooting death of Devon Staten.

Investigators say Taylor killed Staten as he defended his girlfriend Nov. 15, 2012, outside their east Jackson home.

The case went cold for more than a year until a DNA hit after Taylor was arrested in connection with a double murder in north Jackson.

Taylor’s sentencing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 27.

Taylor also is charged in the January 2014 shooting deaths of Arkansas State football standout Markel Owens and his stepfather, Johnny Shivers. Police say Taylor drove the getaway car.
