Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Week: Brenda Johnson

JACKSON, Tenn. — Brenda Johnson teaches second grade at Jackson Christian.

She graduated from Dyersburg High School and then went on to Freed-Hardeman University and eventually graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Johnson started teaching 13 years ago. “I became a teacher after my daughter was in kindergarten because I loved being around kids,” she said.

Johnson started teaching kindergarten before moving to first grade and eventually to second grade. She said she loves to see students excited about learning.

“They still love to learn when they’re in second grade, and I like that,” Johnson said. “They don’t get like all upset when you tell them to do something.”

Johnson admits the job comes with some challenges. “Each child learns in a different way, so I have to try and figure out their best way of learning and then try to help them learn when they struggle with something,” she said.

Johnson said her favorite thing about teaching is “all the hugs and excitement the kids give me when they see me.”

Johnson said she loves to see kids excited when they get a new concept.

Johnson will now be eligible for the statewide Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month Award. Starting in January, vote for her or any of the other nominees at www.seehowitaddsup.com.
