Memphis mayor-elect planning to eliminate 10 jobs
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Memphis Mayor-elect Jim Strickland says he will eliminate the Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission and 10 jobs soon after he takes office Jan. 1.
The Commercial Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/1ZruMQc) he will use the more than $1 million in savings to help fund staff changes.
Strickland says $339,000 will be for newly created positions, and another $29,400 for pay increases. That includes the six chief officers who will lead City Hall as part of a new organizational structure.
He says the staff changes will save the city more than $633,000 a year.
Strickland promised on the campaign trail this year to close the Music Commission and eliminate superfluous deputy director positions.
He says he’ll look at whether other city divisions or private groups can pick up some of the commission’s functions, which included promoting local artists and organizing showcase events.
