Commercial red drum season starts; some shrimp areas closing

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi’s Department of Marine Resources has announced that all waters north of the Intracoastal Waterway in Mississippi territorial waters will be closed to shrimping beginning Friday at one minute after midnight.

Tuesday’s news release says all other Mississippi territorial waters remain open to shrimping.

The department also said the commercial fishing season for Red Drum will open Friday morning. The annual total allowable catch for commercial landings of Red Drum will be 60,000 pounds through Dec. 31 of 2016.

The commercial total allowable catch will be divided into three periods of four months each, with 20,000 pound harvest limits in each period.
