First black sheriff of Adams Co. since 1800s takes oath
NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) – The first African-American sheriff of Adams County in about 140 years has been sworn in.
Multiple media outlets reports Travis Patten received a standing ovation after taking the oath to office Tuesday at the Natchez Convention Center.
Chancery Judge George Ward says Patten is Adam County’s first black sheriff since Reconstruction. He adds that his election shows that the county is making progress.
Patten says he will work to create a better bond with law enforcement and the community. His first day in office will be Monday.
Eighteen Adams County officials took their oaths of office during the ceremony.
