Jackson vows to fight attempt to take airport control

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Jackson officials are vowing to fight any attempt by the state to take away control of the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport.

The Clarion-Ledger reports a bill will be filed in the 2016 Legislature, which begins Tuesday, to give control of the airport to the state and have a tri-county authority oversee. Two members of the authority each would be appointed from Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties along with one at-large member. The Jackson Municipal Airport Authority now oversees operation of the airport.

State Sen. Josh Harkins, R-Flowood, says the bill seeks to create a new airport authority to govern the airport. He said the governor would appoint the seven members of the board. Harkins said the airport is in Rankin County and there should be a regional governing body.
