Sheriff says scene is clear after I-40 bomb scare
BENTON COUNTY, Tenn. — Law enforcement officers have cleared the scene after conducting a robotic search on a car after a bomb scare on I-40 near the Humphreys County line.
According to Benton County Sheriff Kenny Christopher, a man told rest stop attendants that he had a bomb in his car, which was parked in front of the rest stop and had Mississippi tags. THP officials said they got the call around 10:05 a.m.
Bomb-sniffing dogs and a robot did not find anything in the car, and officers cleared the scene around 2:30 p.m., according to Christopher.
The man was taken to Camden General Hospital for a mental evaluation, according to the sheriff.
Troopers shut down both welcome centers before conducting the search.
The rest stop is located near mile marker 133 on the westbound side of 1-40, according to the THP.
