WTHC opens new Trenton Medical Center

TRENTON, Tenn. — West Tennessee welcomes a new medical center. Filling a void left vacant for almost two years. In fact, it has been almost 2-years to the day that Trenton lost its hospital.

After closing Gibson General Hospital, West Tennessee Health Care vowed to restore medical services in some capacity to the area. Although emergency services are not returning officials hope what they are offering will still benefit the community in this new era for health care.

“It’s a place to get primary care, X-rays, lab work, a pharmacy, physical therapy, sports rehab all in one location,” Dr. Lisa Piercey Executive Vice President of Physician Services at West Tennessee Health Care.

Almost a year in the making the organizations new Trenton Medical Center is now taking patients.

“We’re here to really promote health and wellness,” Dr. Piercey said. “That’s not only taking care of people when they’re sick but also keeping them well and making sure they prevent any chronic disease.”

Two years ago this month, Trenton took a blow after WTHC chose to close Gibson General.

“The whole process of restructuring in Gibson County was to meet the needs of the citizens here,” Piercey said. “We saw that they weren’t using ER services and they weren’t using inpatient services but they were using a lot of primary care.”

Now just down the road from the old hospital there is a re-birth.

“A lot of people were heartbroken when the hospital closed but with this new facility I think a lot more people will utilize it,” Kelly Weaver who a co-owner at Duncan’s Pharmacy said.

“We’re getting a lot more interaction with the and are able to talk about alternatives and things like that,” Weaver said.

And although there is no emergency room, minor injures can still be treated.

“The staff here is perfectly trained to stabilize that patient and activate emergency medical services to get them to the local facility where their emergency can be addressed,” Piercey said.

The new medical center is a whopping almost 13,000 square feet while the old one at the hospital was only about 1,300.

West Tennessee Health Care said the old Gibson General Hospital building will soon be demolished and the land has been sold to the Gibson Electric Membership Corporation.
