Hattiesburg City Council overrides mayor’s wastewater veto

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) – Hattiesburg City Council members have voted to override the mayor’s veto of the council’s decision to implement land application as the solution to its wastewater issues.

Media outlets report the council made the 4-1 vote Wednesday in a special-called meeting. Council members had voted Dec. 18 to adopt the land-based application for the city. Mayor Johnny Dupree and Councilwoman Deborah Delgado are in favor of a mechanical system.

Council President Kim Bradley says attorneys and city representatives will meet next week with Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality officials to move forward with land application plans. She says land-based application costs less than mechanical, and that it wouldn’t require the city to close current lagoons.

Engineers will now appraise the land-application system, which may take a couple months.
