Few more days before barges removed at Columbus dam
COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) – Two barges pinned against the Stennis Lock and Dam in Columbus will remain there for a few more days.
Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Operations Manager Rick Saucier tells WTVA-TV it is taking longer than expected for a salvage boat to make its way to the dam.
The company hired to remove the barges was bringing a vessel from Paducah, Kentucky.
Saucier says he expects the boat to arrive on Monday and begin preparations to remove the two barges that have been pinned against the spillway since Dec. 26.
One partially sank two days later and the other floated on top of it.
The barges pose no threat to the dam itself, but are blocking the flow of water into the spillway gates.
