House Democrats plan private meeting Monday as GOP lurks
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – Kentucky House Democrats have planned an unusual meeting Monday while speculation swirls around the Capitol prompted by a Republican leader’s comments last week.
House Republican Floor Leader Jeff Hoover said Monday could be “an historic day” in Kentucky, but has declined to elaborate.
Democrats have a 50-46 majority in the state House of Representatives, the last legislative chamber in the South still controlled by Democrats. But defections and resignations have given Republicans a chance to share power if they can capture four special elections scheduled for March 8.
Democrats normally caucus on Wednesdays but have called a special meeting on Monday. Republicans plan to meet at 3:30. Both meetings are closed to the public.
The House is scheduled to convene at 4 p.m.
