McNairy Co. storm damage more than $1 million

McNAIRY COUNTY, Tenn. — It has been nearly three weeks since an EF-4 tornado touched down in Selmer. As volunteers and first responders worked to clean, they were also adding up the cost of the damage.

McNairy County Commissioners took their first meeting of the year to talk about the devastation that ended 2015.

“Houses and structure damage, there was over a million dollars worth. That’s what our basic assessment was,” EMA Director Rudy Moore said.

Moore said after the storm swept through Falcon Ridge Road, up to 7 homes were destroyed, and 40 structures were damaged. He also estimated more than $100,000 in road damage.

“Most, or at least some of it has been cleaned up and they’re working on it now, so unfortunately it doesn’t look like there’s gonna be any aid from federal money or anything. We didn’t have enough damage to qualify for that,” Moore explained.

The county said they are working with individual homeowners. Mayor Ronnie Brooks said they are working with Tennessee Housing to help those whose homes were not insured.

“We collected our information, and those who did not have insurance, there are programs to rebuild available for those that will qualify,” Mayor Brooks said.

Brooks also commended first responders for how they handled the storm.

“All hands were on deck, just as soon as they could get there. So as always we were right there to aid people that needed it,” Brooks said.

Moore said most of the costs to the county have been for overtime and cleanup by the highway department.

No one was seriously injured in the storm.
