Vicksburg 1 of 2 sites to participate in STEM initiative
VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) – Vicksburg has been selected as one of only two sites in the nation to host the Vivian Burey Marshall STEM Pilot Initiative.
The Vicksburg Post reports the initiative is designed to engage students in under-represented populations of Vicksburg and Baltimore in science, technology, engineering and math education.
Vicksburg Warren School District Superintendent Chad Shealy says the district is overjoyed to receive an opportunity that would otherwise be outside their reach.
The program hopes to provide experience and exposure to students that can lead to sustained interest in the STEM field. Shealy says the goals of the program are in line with the district’s mission.
The $5.7 million initiative is part of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and was named in honor of Justice Thurgood Marshall’s first wife.
