Jackson animal control pushing pet registration
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Jackson pet owners may soon have to pay up if the city implements a mandatory pet registration program.
The Clarion-Ledger reports concerns about a Dec. 18 attack by feral dogs at the Jackson zoo that left six animals dead brought renewed interest to the issue of dogs roaming loose in the city.
Jackson Animal Control Manager Paul Perry says he’s been developing a proposal that would require pet owners to register their animals with the city and pay a fee. He didn’t specify an amount.
Perry says he wants lower fees for owners who have had their pets spayed and neutered – which animal control provides at no cost for animals adopted from the city’s shelter – as a way to combat overpopulation.
Perry says a the program would encourage accountability among pet owners.
