Wingfield HS to pilot evening school for at-risk students
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Wingfield High School Principal Willie Killins plans to start an alternative evening school for at-risk students.
About half the 60 or so openings have been filled, and it’s tentatively scheduled to open Tuesday.
The Clarion-Ledger reports that for those students, the school day will run from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m.
It will focus on the arts, athletics, mathematics, mechanics and engineering – or FAME, with individualized instruction for students who are behind on credits, have discipline issues or need extra help. Killins says he’d like to open it eventually to average and high-performing students, too.
Superintendent Cedrick Gray said his hope is every student will graduate. Wingfield’s graduation rate last academic year was 47 percent.
