Jackson animal control pushing pet registration

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Pet owners in Jackson will have to pay up, if the city follows the path of other municipalities such as Baton Rouge in implementing a mandatory pet registration program.

Concerns about a Dec. 18 attack by feral dogs at the Jackson Zoo that left six animals dead brought renewed interest to the issue of dogs roaming loose in the city.

Paul Perry, manager of the animal control department, has spent nearly two decades in animal control. Perry tells The Clarion-Ledger the actions of irresponsible owners comprise 85 percent of the problem.

Councilman Ashby Foote says he placed an item about feral dogs on the Jan. 12 council agenda, after being contacted by his constituents who were upset about the dog attack at the zoo.
