GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) – Officials say two boats capsized in Bayou Caddy while participating in an oyster relocation program.
The Sun Herald reports the incident happened Monday. Department of Marine Resources representative Melissa Scallan says marine patrols responded to the capsized boats and helped recover one, but the other sank. No injuries were reported.
Scallan says it’s unclear why the two boats capsized.
DMR officials launched the emergency operation Monday as part of an effort to relocate oysters to several reefs along the Coast. The move became necessary after Louisiana opened the Bonnet Carre Spillway and fresh water threatened oyster reefs.
DMR officials expect the project to be completed by Thursday.
